The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tested 10 popular pickup models, and only the Ford F-150 aced the small-overlap crash test.

The small-overlap crash is a new test, implemented on trucks for the first time ever last year. It is one of the most accurate replications of a real-world crash, and uncovered a shocking weakness in many vehicles' protection.

In a typical frontal crash, you don't drive your entire front end into whatever it is you're hitting. Often only a small portion of the front of your truck connects with either a tree, or the corner of an oncoming car as it drifts across the center line. With all the force of impact concentrated on a smaller area, the small-overlap collision can cause the safety cage of some vehicles to deform.

Fortunately, the F-150's switch from steel to aluminum body panels had no negative impact on safety. If it had an effect at all, it made the truck even safer, as the 2016 Ford F-150 SuperCrew and SuperCab configurations were the only trucks tested to fully protect driver and passengers from injury in a small-overlap crash test.
